Mrs. Alison Quayle’s Collection of Indonesian Textiles
Mrs. Alison Quayle, the British ambassador’s wife, has lived in several countries and had the opportunity to observe their varied cultures. Her years in Indonesia (1996–1999), where she was a member of the Indonesian Heritage Society Textile Study Group, enabled her to study and collect textiles from this culturally rich country. These textiles are from four locations in Indonesia - North Sumatra, Central Java, Bali, and the islands of East Nusa Tenggara. Mrs. Quayle will focus on batiks from Jogjakarta, warp-ikat Hinggi cloths from Sumba, and the rare double-ikat Geringsing from the village of Tenganan in Bali. She will describe the techniques used to produce them, the symbolism of the motifs, and the purposes for which they are used.
