VISIT TO THE NATIONAL MUSEUM BANGKOK’S
Saturday, 26 September 2009
The National Museum Bangkok has many treasures including a collection of textiles. The majority of these textiles once belonged to Thai royalty with some pieces dating as far back as the Ayutthaya Period. There are about 50 pieces on display, both cottons and silks, among them a painted silk hanging from the Ayutthaya Period, gold brocade ordered from India in the reign of Rama VII, and silk ikat from Cambodia, also woven for royalty.
Khun Sirin Yuanyaidee, the Museum’s textile gallery curator, will tell us about each textile exhibited and will also demonstrate the ancient way of wrapping and tying as a garment - a jongabaen (lower garment worn by men) and nanang (lower garment worn by women).
Venue: National Museum Bangkok
Na Phrathat Road (next to Thammasat University)
Time: meet at 10:00 near ticket office, and walk to the textile gallery at 10:15 for
a 10:30 start.
