South East Asia Silvers

by Beatrix Latham

An informal talk about silver collectibles in South East Asia through betel tradition and other customs will be given by Ms. Beatrix Latham, Honorary Librarian of the Siam Society. Using her personal collection as a reference point she will explain the known historical origin of the wide variety and shapes of boxes, the silver composition, the variety of designs and their purpose. She will elaborate on the meaning of the designs and their uses among the elite of the people in Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Her talk will be a useful tool in evaluating the authenticity of the pieces available in the collector’s market today. There will be a discussion on how to maintain such pieces in your personal collection.
