Festival of the Phuthai

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Consulting Curator, Dr. Linda S. McIntosh, will talk about the Chulakathin Festival, illustrating the presentation with one held by the Phuthai and a special viewing of Phuthai textiles from The Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection. The Chulakathin festival focuses on the production of monks’ robes in a 24 hour period of time. All steps of production, from collecting the cotton bolls, ginning, carding, rolling, spinning, winding, dyeing, and weaving must be carried out within 24 hours. Members of the community unite to complete the robes to offer to a selected monastery. It also a time of celebration where the laypeople dress in their finest clothing in the various processions to honor the occasion. As the production of hand-spun and hand-woven cotton has decreased in Thailand, only a few communities continue to sponsor a Chulakathin. You are invited to learn more about this seldom held festival and Phuthai textiles of Thailand.
