 Embroidered Costumes

 for Khon Performance

Wednesday, 28 September 2011

The Thai Textile Society invites members and the public to a lecture on the fine and intricate embroidery that adorns the costumes of Khon performers. Khon is a masked dance that uses stylized movements. It is performed by highly trained dancers to the sound of a chorus which is seated at the side of the stage. The chorus tells the story that features episodes from the Ramakien. The Choreography is traditional with little innovations.  Costumes are dictated by tradition, with the performers wearing colored masks and heavily embroidered costumes sewn with colorful gem-like stones.

The talk to be given by Dr. Anucha Thirakanont, director of Thai Kadi Research Institute, will focus on the embroidery used on Thai Khon costumes. A demonstration of how the Khon costumes are worn will follow.
