The Siam Society - Treasures in Silk at Ban Reng Khai with overnight stay at hotel in Surin Province Study Tour

Leaders -

Khun Bilaibhan Sampatisiri, President of the Siam Society & Lady Lea Laarakker Dingjan, Life Member of the Siam Society

Friday, 23 November 2012 - Sunday, 25 November 2012

In 1987 Lady Lea Laarakker Dingjan founded the Ban Reng Khai weaving project. This project has since grown into the Yarn Community Project of Ban Reng Khai. Over the past 20 years, Lady Lea has established a study foundation, built fishponds, promoted sericulture, and helped establish village savings funds, sericulture funds and rice-banks, as well as a village water supply, health care activities, a library and village committees. Of these, the Red Yarn Project, which includes sericulture, has become the most prominent, and has been expanded to seven villages.

Lady Lea Laaraker Dingjan, a professional fabric designer, started with designs which could be made with traditional looms and tools. She then combined the traditional with the contemporary but continued the use of many traditional tools. She has introduced the use of solar dyes, in which the colors are fixed by the sun, and so far is apparently the only one using them in Southeast Asia. Following recognition of her creative, environmentally-friendly, and tradition-based approach using original designs and high-quality-woven silk, the Weaving Project of Ban Reng Khai was awarded the prestigious Unesco-Aphada Seal of Excellence Award for Southeast Asia 2001 – 2005

Under the leadership of Khun Bilaibhan Sampatisiri, President of the Siam Society, and Lady Lea Laarakker Dingjan, the Society will arrange a study trip for Society members to visit Ban Reng Khai Weaving Center in Tha Tum district in Surin province. Members can create their own designs on high-quality-woven silk. The Siam Society will provide 2 meters of silk for each participant to paint his or her own design. Please be sure to bring an old T-shirt or apron for use when painting. Since the work will be out in the open, you should also bring a hat or some other kind of covering for the head. Members can buy the silk directly from the weavers and the village as well.
