A BRIEF ON BATIK

Batik is a phrase of Life Philosophy

Indonesia which consists archipelago located in the Southeast Asia has a tropical climate and only knew two seasons, dry and rainy seasons. Most of its people become farmers, fishermen, traders and craftsmen art to make their liviing.

The arts of Batik Crafts, a tradition of Indonesian population, have been growing since the past (prehistoric) where making decorative wall painting in the cave with a range of colors was a custom. This usually described a set of activities aimed at their lives to repel evil spirits.

Batik is a work of art and culture of Indonesia, while batik can be defined as the process of “pemalaman” (or waxing), dyeing (coloring) and the “pelorotan” process (boiling), which then produce a beautiful fabric.

Basically the art of batik is the same as painting, where the difference lies on the usage of tool called "canting", a small bowl-shaped copper material and has a beak or mouth with stemmed timber and then filled with “malam” liquid (wax), which are then used for painting small and delicate motives (through making line , dots).

Someone who stripe candles with “canting” on a piece of cloth, is simply like giving life to a piece fabric, telling stories through decorative motives and symbols that mean goodness and then worn in accordance to social level.

In every region in Indonesia, batik has its uniqueness and its own idiosyncrasy, both in the form of decorative motives or color layout. Yet in general it would show one similarity of Indonesian batik, that is, soft, neat and has a high level of prudence.

Ornamental varieties in the making of batik are greatly influenced and closely related to several factors, among others, geographical area of batik makers, the nature and ways of life, beliefs, customs, including the circumstances surrounding the natural wealth of flora and fauna as well as the presence of foreign cultural relations contacts (the immigrants).

Batik, as the Indonesian valuable work of art is like paintings that have inner spiritual strength both for the makers and users.
