Thai Textile Society Study Trip - 15-17, March 2013

Visits to Weaving Villages in Kalasin,  Udon Thani, & Ban Chiang,
 UNESCO World Heritage Site

Join the Thai Textile Society for a three day visit to weaving villages in Kalasin, Udon Thani, and also Ban Chiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 15-17 March, 2013.

This study trip, led by Steering Committee Member, Chomporn Dhanesnittaya, will begin with a visit to Baan Phon Village in Kalasin Province. Baan Phon is famous for the weaving of silk pha prae wa. Pha prae wa, in the language of the Phu Tai people meaning cloth which is one wa , or about two meters in length, is a stole worn around the neck or shoulders. Using both khit (continuous supplementary weft) and chok (discontinuous supplementary weft) weaving with embroidery, the Phu Tai weavers are able to produce complex patterns and motifs in striking colors on traditionally red ground, and in the process create their own unique identity. This highly sophisticated art of weaving takes a long time to master and is usually handed down from mother to daughter. Her Majesty the Queen realized the enormous cultural value and the need for preservation of this art that she created a prae wa section and asked master weavers from Baan Phon Villages to be instructors at the Queen’s SUPPORT Foundation at Chitralada Center so that the art will be preserved for generations to come.

The trip will continue with visits to weaving villages in Nong Wua Sor, and Na Kha in Udon Thani Province.  Famous for their skills in continuous supplementary weft weaving, the master weavers in Nong Wua Sor are also teachers at the SUPPORT Foundation.  We will have the rare opportunity to see them at work in their current project of weaving masterpieces for the Support Foundation.
Na Kha, is well known for its indigo dying and has a large OTOP venue in Udon Thani.  There are
more than 50 shops selling hand woven silk and cotton textile products in this area.

En route to Na Kha, we will visit the Ban Chiang National Museum and Archaeological Site, located about 56 km from Udon Thani. We will also visit nearby, a traditional Tai Phuan house, which was graced by the visit of Their Majesties the King and Queen in 1972. This wooden house built on stilts is recognized as a heritage house and has been given an award by the Royal Society of Siamese Architects.
