Jim Thompson Farm
One weekend a month from June to November 2013
For centuries textiles have played an important role in all societies. In addition to being used for clothing, woven materials have also been used for various religious and decorative purposes. Culture, beliefs and a way of life have been passed from one generation to the next though weaving. The art of weaving can be used as a form of meditation, a brain exercise and it also serves to bring generations closer together.
The loom has been used to make cloth since ancient times. Weavers understand and appreciate the importance of preparing and coloring yarn in textile production. Many natural pigments that are environmentally friendly, including leaves, flowers, bark and soil, are used to dye yarns.
Weaving in the Green, creative and fun activities, offers participants a chance to learn how to weave using a wooden loom. Participants can create their own unique placemats, handbag, headdresses, or scarves. Moreover, they will learn how to dye yarns using natural dyes which can be found around the Jim Thompson Farm like kum-sad seeds which give an orange color, butterfly pea flowers which have a blue color and tamarind leaves which provide a yellow dye.
The Jim Thompson Art Center is arranging a series of workshop trips to the Jim Thompson Farm in the Nakorn Ratchaseema province. The participants will depart from the Jim Thompson Art Center by van on Saturday morning and return on Sunday afternoon.
