Somsanith Nithakhong was born in Laos in 1958. He spent his childhood in Luang Prabang and Vientiane where he
studied until 1976. He graduated fromthe National School of Medicine in Vientiane, Laos, before leaving his homeland in 1985 to continue his higher education in France. He received his Master's degree from the Institute of Visual Arts in Orleans University near Paris, and his Ph.D. in Psychology from La Sorbonne University.
He then devoted his time predominantly to the arts that have been passed on to him from many generations, and became a professional artist spending countless hours painting the sceneries of Laos, carving woods, and creating traditional crafts. He devoted most of his time to the very fine art of gold thread embroidery of the Royal Lao Palace, with precise and calculated stitches and movements, giving life to collars, skirts, pillows and many religious objects.
When he came back to Luang Prabang in 2002 he wanted to help the revival of these arts and ancient royal traditions and became a mentor for younger generations. He became Counselor for Culture and Art for Amantaka and teaches at the Architecture Department at the National Souphanouvong University. He also founded the No Phao Troup composed of 32 members, most of them students, who specialized in four main activities: Traditional Dance and Music as well as I’Pok, the Luang Phrabang Puppet Theatre, Flower Art and the Banana Leaf Arrangements, Stencils and Lacq Crafts, Golden and Silver Threads Embroidery.
This event is part of a programme by the Siam Society to promote ASEAN Cultural Activities.
