June Collectors Corner - The Allure of Lao Khrang Textiles
A Visit WithKhun Udom Rientrakul At Maya Textile Gallery Saturday, 13 June 2015
The Lao Khrang arrived in Thailand from Laos in the 18th and 19th centuries and settled in the country’s central and westerly regions. Some believe the name Khrang comes from the color of the women’s skirt which is red, originally dyed with lac extract, which in the Lao language is Khrang. These brightly colored Pha sins display the talents of the weavers fine ikat and jok workmanship, weaving geometric designs and abstract animal figures.
Khun Udom Rientrakul will share his knowledge and wonderful Lao Khrang pieces that he has collected over many years. We’ll look at the weaving techniques, colors, designs and motifs used in these weavings.
