EUROPEAN INFLUENCE ON FASHION AT THE SIAMESE COURT
Lecture by Dr. AnuchaTeerakanon
Late in the 19th century, especially following King Chulalongkorn’s lengthy visit to Europe, European fashion became popular at the Siamese court and with the nobility. In favor were white lacy blouses, seen during the Victorian era, worn in Siam with the traditional jongabaen, which is the lower garment gathered up between the legs to give the effect of loose pants. And so began a fashion that was a blend of East and West, and in some cases the women cut their hair short to be in style.
Dr. Anucha Teerakanon, Director of the Thai Khadee Center at Thammasat University has extensive knowledge of Thai dress and costumes. He will take us through the evolution of that fashion which was attractive in its own way.
