A VISIT TO THE TAI YUAN OF SARABURI
Saturday 17 December, 2016
Leader: Wipawee Tiyawes
Curator at the Tilleke and Gibbins Textile Collection
The trip will take us to The Tai Yuan Folk Cultural Hall of Saraburi located about 110 km north of Bangkok, where we will spend some time to learn the life style and traditions of the Tai Yuan people. There we will have a chance to see extremely rare hand-woven fabrics, a small collection but very fine, with designs specific to the Tai Yuan of Saraburi which are slightly different from those of other Tai Yuan clans in other Thai provinces.
The Cultural Hall comprises of a set of very rare old Thai wooden houses which the owner Ajarn Songchai Wannakul started collecting in 1969. These include the Residence of the Saraburi Governor and the house of the notorious bandit Kong from Suphanburi. In addition to the houses and the textiles there is a significant collection of 20 river boats at the dock, which is named after the Pasak River where they are moored - the Pasak River Boat Museum.
We’ll have lunch and afterwards visit a nearby weaving community.
