The Thai Textile Society, in association with The Siam Society, invites members and the public to a lecture on “Tai Dam Ethnohistory: From Vietnam to Laos and Siam” by Professor Pichet Saiphan on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. The lecture, in English, will take place at The Siam Society in the Fourth Floor lecture room.
Professor Pichet will use slides to illustrate his discussion of the history of the Tai Dam people with particular attention to their impact on Lao and Siamese textiles.
Professor Pichet is a member of the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology at Thammasat University. He is a Ph. D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Vietnam. Previously, he received his master’s degree in anthropology from Thammasat University and his bachelor’s degree from Chulalongkorn University. Professor Pichet’s master’s thesis described naga stories in the Mekong Basin of northeastern Thailand and their connection to local culture as expressed in contemporary religious rites. Professor Pichet also participated in the Asian Research Fellow Program at the Asian Research Institute in The National University of Singapore.
The suggested donation is 100 baht for members of the Thai Textile Society and The Siam Society. Members of the public are asked to donate 200 baht.
