Textile Traditions of the Tai Groups in Nghe An Province, Vietnam

by Russell Howard
10.30 am - 12.00 pm
The Lecture Room, 4th Floor Siam Society
131 Soi Asoke (21) Sukhumvit Rd, Bangkok

In this talk, Russell Howard will describe the distinct textile traditions of the two main Tai groups living in Nghe An Province, Vietnam. The textiles from this province are interesting since many old textiles come from this area and are sold as Lao textiles. By recognizing which textiles origiate from this province, we will have a better understanding of Tai textiles, especially from neighboring areas such as northeast Laos.

Russell Howard works in the financial services industry in Melbourne, Australia, and has been collecting Lao textiles since 1998. He was a regular visitor to Laos between 1993 and 1998 and made two trips to Nghe An province in 1997.
